Ceramic tiles are fabricated for more than just bathrooms and floors. Design Boom reports that people have been using tiles as decor for 4000 years. That's because they are pretty and versatile. They can also be used to create a variety of beautiful projects. Both children and adults will find many wonderful ways to use ceramic tiles to express themselves artistically and make their homes more attractive. Here are a few of them.

Children's Party Activity

Painting ceramic tiles is a great activity for a children's birthday party. Both boys and girls will enjoy getting creating and painting whatever they can imagine on a tile of their own.

Pour paints into empty egg cartons, and supply plenty of brushes. If you don't want to use paint, you can also give kids ceramic markers or permanent markers. Place a protective cover on a table or an outdoor picnic table, and let kids go crazy. Take a picture of all the finished tiles so you will remember the fun, and then allow guests to take their tiles home as party favors.

Mosaic Stepping Stone

You can reuse ceramic tiles to make a beautiful mosaic stepping stone for your garden or yard. Choose bright tiles with colors that compliment each other, and carefully break the tiles into smaller pieces. Then plan how you will arrange the tiles to make a pretty picture or design. Finally mix concrete or a crafting material into a stepping stone mold and add your tiles. The result will be a beautiful stepping stone that you will treasure.

A Memorial Wall Display

Use ceramic tiles from places like Ceramic Technology Inc. to remember someone who is passed. Ask each member of your family or person who was close to your loved one to paint something on a tile that reminds them of the person who passed away. This healing activity will allow family members to grieve together as they remember the loved one they have lost. This is especially therapeutic for children who are experiencing the death of a loved one. This activity would even be meaningful as a way of remembering a family pet.

Hang the finished tiles as a group on the wall along with a photo of the person who has died. You will always be thankful for this personalized memorial.

Homemade House Numbers

Announce your house number, you family's name or anything else you want the world to know by painting ceramic tiles. Use one tile for each number or letter, and hang them near your front door.

It looks great when you use one color for your house numbers and a coordinating color for the letters in your family's last name. Hang them together for a fun, welcoming and useful display.

Cement Birdbath or Stone Bench

You can easily make your own garden decorations with cement kits. Homemade birdbaths, benches and other decor can be fun to make and even more fun to personalize. Press pieces of ceramic tile into the cement before it has dried. This will add a pop of color to your yard and make your artwork shine in the sunlight.

This activity is also excellent for clay pots or planters.

Kitchen Backsplash

Ceramic tiles look fantastic in a kitchen, and you can create your own design by selecting the right tiles. Place tiles on the wall behind your stove or sink. If you are especially artistic, consider adding a few tiles you have painted yourself. You can also find tiles with your family members' initials or special dates. A pretty backsplash not only looks great but also helps make your kitchen feel unique and special to your family.

You can use ceramic tiles for a variety of projects that will add beauty to your home and let your creative side shine. Take a look at some tiles to see where your imagination takes you.
